Walking Is the Most Underrated Exercise on Earth
I have joined gyms, bought fitness apps, and once owned a pair of very serious running shoes that mostly watched television with me. None of it stuck. Then my doctor told me to try walking twenty minutes a day, and everything changed.
Walking is the great ignored exercise. It needs no membership, no special clothes, and no warm-up. It is free, it is low-impact, and it works at any age, in any weather, in any neighborhood.
The physical benefits surprised me. My back stopped hurting, my sleep deepened, and my afternoon energy dip disappeared. But the real magic happens between the ears. A walk is thinking time with a soundtrack of birdsong and passing cars. Problems that seemed enormous at my desk shrink to normal size somewhere around the second mile.
Scientists agree, by the way. Regular walking improves mood, memory, creativity, and longevity. Half the great ideas in history were probably thought up mid-stroll.
Here is my advice: do not call it exercise. Call it going for a think. Twenty minutes, no phone, no goal. Let your legs move and your mind wander.
It is the easiest habit I have ever kept, and the one that has given me the most.
